This morning I took a little time to inspect the stone wall that inhabits so many property lines around
New England (Vermont); ours is no exception. They are mostly granite, as it is most common- dense and left from glacier melt from long ago. Interestingly, they were basically the first type of fence as people started settling in the New England colonies. They were at peak use in late 1700s until mid 1800s. I suppose other types of fencing started to take over at the other times. Can you imagine settling in here and then before you had any livestock building a fence with boulders. Then a fence inspector would come....if he okayed it- then it wouldn't be your fault if your animals broke out and damaged other peoples' items. Anyway, here is a picture below of the stone wall behind our current house. They outline most every property around here.
